EMERYVILLE, Calif. November 6, 2007 Milter.org (www.milter.org) was re-launched today as the largest open source resource center for the world's leading mail filters (or Milters). The new community site has been reviewed and tested privately by volunteer members, and is now ready for participation by all those interested in advancing Milter applications.
The new site includes a catalog of open source and commercial Milters. Authors can add and update their filters and users can search for filters, download them, and rate them. The site also includes development resources such as documentation, an API reference guide, and sample code. A 'Milter announcement mailing list' has been added as well.
"The Milter community has grown much faster and been much more active than we had anticipated," said Greg Shapiro, Director of Strategic Technology at Sendmail, a sponsor for Milter.org. "We're glad we had the opportunity to expand the web site functionality, and re-launch the Milter.org site for such an enthusiastic community of Milter developers."
The new Milter.org
This web site is designed to provide the world's most complete resource center for open source and commercial Milters. This site provides access to the Milter.org interactive catalog of available Sendmail mail filters, or 'Milters'. In a single location, we have brought together the leading developer resources, API reference materials, and catalogs for building, posting and even rating Milters.
The resource library already provides over forty (40+) open source Milters for users and developers.
"With the new Milter.org site, users and developers of Milters like me have a centralized, trusted resource for posting, reviewing and exchanging Milters," said David F. Skoll, President of Penguin Software. "The new site also provides a easy to navigate and centralized place for customers to view all of the different Milters available to them."
What is a Milter? The Sendmail API "Milter" enables third-party programs to access mail messages as they are being processed by the Mail Transfer Agent (MTA). This allows them to examine and modify message content and meta-information during the SMTP transaction. Any of these filters can be added or changed independently of other existing Milters.
With the growth in email volumes and the prevalence of threats like spam, viruses and targeted attacks such as Denial of Service, Directory Attacks, the need arose to quickly and easily expand the Sendmail message processing solution to include threat protection and optimized messaging performance, so the Milter program was launched.
Possible uses for filters include spam rejection, virus filtering, and content control. In general, Milters seek to address site-wide filtering concerns in a scalable way.
The Milter API seeks to address site-wide filtering concerns in a scalable way by supporting the following MTAs:
- Sentrion™ MP appliance from Sendmail
- Open source Sendmail 8.12 and later
- Open source Postfix 2.4 and later
- Switch from Sendmail
- Mailstream Manager from Sendmail
Milter Developer Center and Kit: The Milter API provides an interface for third-party software to validate and modify messages as they pass through the mail transport system. The Developer Center includes:
- A description of Milter's design goals
- An explanation of Milter application architecture, including interactions between the support library and user code, and between filters and the MTA
- A specification of the C application programming interface
- An example of a simple Milter filter.
